Joining SAR-OH is easy. We have outlined the 3 primary steps below. The basic requirements are that you are 18 years or older, have a clean criminal history and be willing to commit the time to training.

 

SAR-OH does not conduct a once a year recruiting class

like some SAR teams. We will incorporate you into our

standard trainings and work with you to get you

the skills that you need. Our training is

based on the environment and situations that

we experience in Ohio.

 

SAR-OH does not have any K9s on the team. We partner

with several K9 teams that provide the K9 resources.

Our primary focus is Search Management and

Ground Searchers.

-  You do not need experience!

-  We are all volunteers and understand time            constrains.

-  Our ability to serve the community is directly          related to the number of volunteers that we          have.

Step One

 

Come meet everyone! We hold meetings or trainings twice a month where you can come and learn more.

Step Two

 

So you have met some members of the team and want to join. Now comes the paperwork. A membership packet will be provided to you with the required application forms. You will need to have a FBI background check completed. This typically can be done at your local police department or most BMV Offices.

Step Three

 

Once your paperwork is complete you will begin your probation period. In this time period you must pay your annual $35 dues. You will also need to complete FEMA's free courses IS-100 & IS-700 online.

 Minimum gear list required to respond to missions.

  •  

  • SAR-OH uniform BDU pants (black, tan or khaki) 

  • Sturdy Boots

  • Red SAR-OH shirt or ASRC uniform shirt

  • Water container of one or two liter capacity

  • Day pack

  • Five large, heavy-duty plastic trash bags

  • Food for 72 hours

  • Headlamp (or hands-free flashlight) and second light source

  • Lighter, matches and candle, or equivalent fire source

  • Knife

  • Multi-tool

  • Compass

  • UTM grid reader

  • Personal First Aid Kit

  • Waterproof pen/pencil and paper

  • Sharpie marker 

  • Whistle

  • Two pairs plastic or vinyl examination gloves

  • Leather Work Gloves

  • Safety Glasses

  • 1 inch tubular webbing (enough length to make an ASRC seat harness)

  • Orange ANSI Type II reflective vest
